Magic Spoon and Obvi: anchor CPG logos behind a 10X run into a Series A.
How a subscription retention startup built its go-to-market from scratch, won Magic Spoon and Obvi as anchor brands, and grew ARR tenfold in time to raise a $15M Series A in one of the toughest venture markets on record.
This case study draws on work led by a Rebar principal in a previous operating role.
The outcome
As Chief Revenue Officer of a subscription retention startup, a Rebar principal built the go-to-market function from scratch and landed Magic Spoon and Obvi as anchor CPG brands. ARR grew 10X and customer logos 5X, giving the company the traction to raise a $15M Series A in one of the worst venture markets on record.
At a glance
Situation, complication, resolution
SSituation
The startup had a product that helped DTC brands keep subscribers longer, a small set of early customers and no formal go-to-market team.
CComplication
Venture funding had tightened sharply. Investors wanted proof of real traction, and DTC brands were cutting tool spend rather than adding vendors.
RResolution
The team built the revenue engine from zero, focused on recognizable CPG brands with large subscription programs, and used them as proof for both buyers and investors.
01 · The challenge
Why is selling to DTC subscription brands hard in a down market?
Subscription CPG brands live and die on retention. Every point of churn costs them revenue they already paid to acquire, so the right tool is valuable. But in 2022 many of the same brands were cutting software budgets and consolidating vendors.
At the same time, venture investors had pulled back. A Series A required clear evidence of growth, retention and logos that other brands and investors would recognize.
The company needed both at once: customers that would prove the product and a growth curve strong enough to raise on.
02 · The approach
How do you grow 10X and raise a Series A when budgets and funding are tight?
The team concentrated on brands whose results would be visible and respected, built the GTM function around repeatable wins, and made every anchor logo part of both the sales story and the fundraising story.
Build the team
Hired across sales, partnerships, solutions engineering, business development and marketing, growing GTM headcount to 10+.
Target the anchors
Prioritized well-known CPG brands with large subscriber bases, where retention gains would be visible and credible.
Land Magic Spoon and Obvi
Won both brands with a retention case built on their subscription economics and a fast, low-effort rollout.
Turn logos into leverage
Used the anchor brands in sales, partner and investor conversations to grow logos 5X and ARR 10X ahead of the raise.
| Audience | Importance | What they wanted to see | What the anchor brands proved |
|---|---|---|---|
| DTC subscription brands | High | Peers getting results | Recognizable CPG brands trusting the platform |
| Investors | High | Real traction in a tough market | 10X ARR and 5X logos with known names |
| Agency and tech partners | Medium | A product worth recommending | Live deployments at respected brands |
| New hires | Medium | A company that is winning | Momentum and logos to sell against |
03 · The results
What did the anchor CPG logos make possible?
Magic Spoon and Obvi gave the company names that both buyers and investors recognized. Combined with a GTM team built for repeatable wins, the result was a 10X run in ARR and a funded Series A while much of the market was frozen.

Delivered during a period of tight DTC budgets.
Series A
Raised in one of the toughest venture markets on record.
