The Reseller Partner Onboarding Checklist

Reseller partnerships fail in onboarding more often than at any other stage. The pattern is consistent: the contract gets signed, the partner is excited, then nothing happens because no one operationalized the actual sequence required to make the partner sales-ready. Here is the working checklist for the first 60 days.

Week 1: Contract Operations

Get the partner provisioned in your systems immediately. Issue a partner-tier login to your demo environment, set up the deal registration mechanism, share the partner pricing schedule, and provision a shared communication channel.

Send a single welcome email with all credentials, all links, and a single named contact for everything they need. Skip the welcome packets and partner kits — those produce friction without progress.

Confirm by end of week one that the partner can log into your environment, register a test deal, and reach their named contact. Three confirmations, no more.

Weeks 2-3: Sales Enablement Working Sessions

Block two 60-minute working sessions with the partner’s primary sales contact. Session one covers your product’s positioning, common objections, and pricing — taught as if you were onboarding your own AE.

Session two is a live demo where the partner’s salesperson runs the demo with you correcting in real time. They will not be ready to demo independently after one practice. Schedule two more practice sessions across weeks 3-4.

Skip recorded enablement courses. Live sessions produce competent reseller salespeople. Recorded courses produce reseller salespeople who know your slides and cannot run your demo.

Week 4: Joint Discovery on Real Accounts

By week four, run a joint discovery call on a real prospect from the reseller’s pipeline. The reseller leads, you support. The reseller learns where your product fits and where it does not in real customer conversations.

Run two more joint discoveries in week five. By week six, the reseller should be running discovery independently with you available for technical questions only.

This sequence — observe, lead with support, lead independently — moves a reseller from theoretical product knowledge to working sales capability faster than any other mechanism.

Weeks 5-6: First Deal in Pipeline

By week six, the reseller should have a deal in pipeline that they sourced and are working independently. Your role becomes deal coaching: help with pricing strategy, attend the proposal review, support the negotiation if needed.

If no deal is in pipeline by week six, diagnose the gap. Is the reseller not actively selling (activation problem)? Are they selling but the prospects are not engaging (positioning problem)? Each requires a different intervention.

The first deal in pipeline is a leading indicator that matters more than any contract milestone. Track it explicitly.

Weeks 7-8: First Close and Renewal Setup

Help the reseller close their first deal cleanly. Attend the closing call if invited, support pricing escalations, ensure the contract terms are partner-favorable.

Immediately after close, walk through the renewal motion: who owns the customer relationship, when the renewal conversation starts, how the reseller stays close to the customer through year one. Resellers who lose first-year customers stop selling.

After first close, the reseller transitions from onboarding to active partner cohort with quarterly business reviews. The 60-day checklist is complete.
