Payment Facilitator (PayFac)

A payment facilitator (PayFac) is a company that enables sub-merchants to accept electronic payments under its own master merchant account — simplifying onboarding, underwriting, and settlement for platforms that want to offer integrated payments.

The PayFac model emerged as an alternative to the traditional merchant account process, where each business needed its own direct relationship with an acquiring bank. Under the PayFac model, the facilitator acts as an intermediary: it holds a single master merchant ID and boards individual sub-merchants underneath it.

This dramatically speeds up merchant onboarding (from weeks to minutes) but also shifts risk and compliance responsibility to the PayFac. Payment facilitators must manage KYC/AML compliance, transaction monitoring, chargeback handling, and reserve management for their sub-merchants.

Companies evaluating the PayFac model need to weigh the revenue opportunity (typically 15-40 basis points on processing volume) against the operational complexity. Alternatives include PayFac-as-a-Service providers like Payrix, Finix, and WePay, which handle the compliance infrastructure while allowing platforms to maintain the merchant relationship.
