Equipment Financing

Equipment financing is a loan or lease arrangement specifically designed to fund the purchase of business equipment — from commercial vehicles and manufacturing machinery to technology infrastructure and specialized tools — where the equipment itself typically serves as collateral.

Equipment financing allows businesses to acquire necessary assets without depleting cash reserves. Because the equipment serves as collateral, qualification requirements are often less stringent than unsecured business loans, and approval can be faster.

Two primary structures exist: equipment loans (the business owns the equipment after the loan is repaid, typically over 3-7 years) and equipment leases (the business uses the equipment for a set period with options to purchase, renew, or return at the end). Each has different implications for tax treatment, balance sheet impact, and total cost of ownership.

Industries with heavy equipment needs — construction, manufacturing, healthcare, transportation, and increasingly data center and AI compute infrastructure — should develop relationships with specialty equipment lenders who understand their asset classes and can move quickly when opportunities arise.
