Data Center Capacity Planning

Data center capacity planning is the strategic process of forecasting, sourcing, and securing the compute, power, cooling, and network resources a business will need — balancing current operational requirements against projected growth, particularly for AI and high-performance computing workloads.

Data center capacity has become a strategic bottleneck. The explosion of AI training and inference workloads has created unprecedented demand for high-density compute environments, and supply has not kept pace. Major markets are reporting 18-24 month lead times for new deployments.

Effective capacity planning involves several dimensions: compute requirements (CPU vs. GPU, density per rack, total power draw), power infrastructure (utility availability, redundancy level), cooling architecture (air-cooled vs. direct liquid cooling vs. immersion), and network requirements (latency-sensitive vs. throughput-optimized).

Organizations should approach capacity planning with a 2-3 year horizon and consider a multi-site strategy for resilience. Working with an infrastructure advisor who has visibility across providers, markets, and pricing can significantly improve outcomes.
