Banking as a Service (BaaS)

Banking as a Service (BaaS) is a model where licensed banks provide their banking infrastructure — including accounts, cards, lending, and compliance — through APIs, enabling non-bank companies to offer financial products under their own brand.

BaaS allows fintech companies, SaaS platforms, and marketplaces to embed banking products (checking accounts, debit cards, lending, FDIC-insured deposits) into their user experience without obtaining their own banking charter. The BaaS provider holds the license and handles regulatory compliance while the partner company owns the customer relationship and branding.

The BaaS ecosystem involves three layers: the sponsor bank (holds the charter and regulatory licenses), the BaaS middleware platform (provides APIs, compliance tools, and program management — examples include Unit, Treasury Prime, and Bond), and the fintech or brand (builds the customer-facing product).

Recent regulatory scrutiny has reshaped the BaaS landscape significantly. The FDIC and OCC have increased oversight of bank-fintech partnerships, leading some sponsor banks to exit or reduce their BaaS programs. Companies evaluating BaaS should prioritize partners with strong regulatory track records, transparent compliance frameworks, and sustainable business models.
